This poor Danish shark met his end while bicycling around Copenhagen without a helmet. For lunch today, I ventured to Torvehallerne market.
I DID have fish for lunch. It was NOT the shark, octopus, or the Norwegian Crab. In the morning was orientation for my core DIS class, "Sustainability in Europe." There are many opportunities outside the classroom for involvement with the Sustainability program during my time in Copenhagen. For example:
Conveniently, my time in the DIS Sustainability in Europe program overlaps with Copenhagen's year as the European Green Capital. Celebrations for that honor began tonight. 30,000 candles spelled out quotes related to sustainability and climate change. I was one of several Sustainability in Europe students helping to light these candles. Yet, it was a futile exercise. Within a few moments, the wind blew out each candle.

The best advice I've yet received from a Dane is this: "there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing." Still, getting used to the weather in Copenhagen will take some time. Today, I participated in the DIS "Amazing Race." It could more accurately be retitled the "Amazingly Cold Race." Luckily, there are enough great pastry/coffee shops in Copenhagen that my team was able to warm up in between almost every stop along the race.
At today's DIS opening ceremony, I snapped this selfie with student Megan Mohney and .... DIS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Malene Torp.
"Selfie" was Denmark's word of the year, following the semi-infamous selfie seen around the world with President Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron and —of course!— Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmid. FUN FACT #1:The Copenhagen Circus Building stage behind us actually covers a pool for trained sea lions (trust me, it only sounds like I'm making that up). FUN FACT #2: Hans Christian Anderson was inspired to write The Little Mermaid following a night at the Copenhagen Circus where one of his inebriated friends confused the trained sea lions for mermaids (if it sounds like I made up that fact ... it's because I did). Category: The Journey Regrettably, 2 of the items I left New Jersey with did not make it to Copenhagen — neither my luggage nor "Paul the Vulture." .... AND now, I present a scene brought to you by Scandinavian Airlines: YES! That is the man across from me on the plane who couldn't wait until landing to pour out his heart into a song, which he transcribed on a sheet music pad nearly twice as wide as the tray table.
*Seriously, can anyone recognize this composer? When I'm on a plane I can barely stay awake (or take a decent picture). And this man can go "Full-Treble Beethoven," writing a score for multiple instruments while every five minutes an airline attendant knocks into his arm with the food cart. ***** Anyway, that's all for now. Check back in tomorrow when I report live from Opening Ceremonies for the Danish Institute for Study Abroad spring 2014 semester. I’ll be spending my spring 2014 semester in Copenhagen, Denmark. My first official day in the city is January 19th. Every day I’ll post 1 photo and 1 sentence Although, some days I may write or post more Each picture will have a category Categories may include (but are not limited to)
Here’s my first photo Today’s category — NEW FRIENDS That’s me and Postman Pat chilling in Tivoli Gardens in summer 2012
In 2012, I spent a few days in Copenhagen. It was just enough time to get a taste of this unique city. I’ve been trying to find my way back there ever since. For this trip, I will be a student resident. I will be taking classes at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad (forever after referred to as DIS) — my core class is in Sustainability in Europe Today, I’m starting on a packing list. For a trip like this, I’m trying to choose items that have more than one use. Still, I’m packing light. And I plan to “pay it forward” with most of what I bring. Occasionally, I’ll also post links to worthwhile articles and blogs. Hopefully, I’ll be able to share some posts from fellow DIS bloggers in Copenhagen. Here’s one to start out with from Untapped Cities-- --Find out about the pieces of Europe that hide in NYC's subterranean Shameless plug — I’ll have a handful of tweets while studying abroad |
