Given the recent news out of Ukraine, it seems appropriate for this picture of Berlin's Holocaust Memorial News about Ukrainian Jews being forced to register made the rounds 2 days ago. Admittedly, when I first found out, I was incensed. However, as I read more I started to doubt the full veracity of the story as reported in major news outlets Although the truth is still unclear, one thing is sure: this episode is more complicated than initially reported Still, there are a few important lessons to glean from this story: But HERE is the larger lesson: There is a peril in blindly following the mantra of “never forget”; it becomes easy to overact to rather small events And overreaction can be exploited Not every small act of extortion or misguided propaganda effort of separatists requires an international response. However, taken as a whole, such episodes reveal trends that should not be ignored Whether or not these trends lead to violence against Jews or other ethnic groups, there are still far reaching implications to these incidents. To hyper-focus on one possible outcome misses the bigger picture. There are a range of more likely and equally unnerving outcomes to this scenario If this story regarding Ukraine stirred up an individual more than any other development in past weeks involving Russia, Crimea, and Putin ... then that person hasn’t been following these current events close enough IF this post has been a little too serious ...
